Tilaran, a hilltop town with broad, clean streets, is also a center of tour activity as visitors explore the fabulous country and move between the lake and volcano, the Pacific beaches and International airport at Liberia, and the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest. Outside diners on the covered terrace enjoy balmy weather and look over a pretty garden at the passing street life in this vital town of about 12,000 residents.
Tilaran, known as osta Ria's niest town, covers a hilltop 3 miles from Lake Arenal and is for almost the whole lake, the goernmental, business, shopping, and professional center of the region. As seen from the outdoor dining room, nearly 4,000 bikers pass by the hotel at the start of the annual 2-day tour of the lake. The town fills up with the bikers and their families and support friends for the huge event.
Carefully laid out in 1912 on a level hilltop, Tilaran is surrounded by yet higher hills and mountains. The dormant volcano Miravalles is partially visible in the distance.
The nearly 4,000 riders in the annual two-day Vuelta del Lago (circuit of the lake) pass the hotel at the start of the tour on a Saturday morning in February.
Room #1 is the handiapped accessible suite and has a jungle mural. Room #1 has a large handicapped-accessible bathroom.
Each of the guest suites has a theme represented by a mural done by Costa Rican artists. The jungle room is the special handicapped-accessible room and bathroom. There is another handicapped-accessible room off the indoor dining room.
The ensuite mountain room is in the hotel's 2-story addition. This room has a oastal mural.
The windmill room and the ocean room are in the two-story addition to the hotel.
The waterfall room has a mural depicting one of the beuatiful waterfalls near Tilaran. The Guanaaste room's mural displays a mural of a Guanaaste tree in bloom.

The owners' or managers' suite is double the size of the other suites. The hotel has a large professional kithen capable of a full daily menu.

The kitchen is very large and well equipped.
A separate building ontains a bathroom and the laundry. The bathroom seres the housekeeper's separate room. This pump room proides water pressure to the two-story addition and has enough apaity to sere another addition should one be built.

The addition contain two of the fie gueest suites a covered roof-top terrace. This delightful stairase leads to the seond-floor suite and to the third-floor terrae.
The newer building has one single guest suite on each floor and a covered rooftop terrace. A stuccoed stairway leads to the second floor.
The terrace looks oer Tilaran in all directions and extends to the beautiful surrounding hills. The cathedral that marks the center of town is right across the street from La Carreta.
The terrace provides views over the whole of Tilaran, here including the cathedral, which is just across the street. The front of the cathedral faces Tilaran's central park.
The beds and other furniture in the suites have all been ustom-made by a bamboo speialist in the south of Costa Rica.The beds all hae orthopedic mattresses. The hotel is named after the traditional olorful oxarts (arretas) of Costa Rica. This authentic art sits beside the hotel entrance.
