B18 New Valle del Congo Lodge at Monteverde has great potential |
|
Completed in 2009, this fully furnished hotel with 10 rooms (each set up for three guests) and a 16-seat restaurant is located by the Monteverde Cloud Forest, one of the premier tourist areas of Costa Rica. The hotel is named after the howler monkeys, called congos, which inhabit the thick forests, as do many other animals and birds. It sits on 3.7 acres, including a forest trail. From here, it's just a few minutes up a paved road to the entrance to the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve with its fascinating trails and guided day and night hiking. The hotel has not opened for business, though there are a website and brochures, cable TV and Wi-fi. Signage and marketing savvy could make this well located hotel a big success as the economy and tourism pick up again. There's plenty of room for additional features such as a swimming pool and/or pavillion or other resort structures. The hotel has its own powerful spring in the forest to serve all water needs, though the municipal water system is available at the entrance to the hotel property..

Every room has this view of the Gulf of Nicoya and the Nicoya Peninsula |
The hotel's proximity to Monteverde and Santa Elena alone makes it an excellent buy yet it is far enough from the tourist centers so that it is a quiet, restful place, unaffected by the thick tourist traffic of buses and vans that sometimes jam the streets of Santa Elena's triangular central area. Not far below the hotel (less than a mile) is the road in to the University of George Biological Center and the thrilling San Luis waterfall. From this tranquil and awesomely scenic spot, guests would find it easy to visit the many features of the Monteverde area, the zip lines and hanging bridges, the hummingbird santuaries, the frog, snake and insect zoos and museums, the guided hikes into the unique cloud forest, the cheese-making factory and other enterprises of the Quakers who settled here over 50 years ago, and much more. |
