| El Castillo is a small village with a few hotels located at the eastern end of the lake close to the volcano. At night residents and tourists often have brilliant views of lava flows on the western side of the volcano. El Castillo is located about 30 minutes from La Fortuna and is reached by a gravel road about 5 miles from the paved lake road. The hills climbing up to the west toward Monteverde are thickly forested, and it is possible to reach the Monteverde Cloud Forest on a day hike, whereas to reach Monteverde by car would require a three-hour drive around the lake. Near El Castillo, the dirt road around the south side of the lake is breached seasonally by the Rio Cano Negro. Future bridging of that river will much reduce the time to Tilaran, Liberia, and the beaches. | ||||
