The dormant volcanos La Vieja, Miravalles, and Tenorio and their national parks to the northwest of Lake Arenal have undergone little tourism development so far, but there are plans afoot, we hear. There are many opportunities to buy an existing Tico house in one of the small communities or the major town of Liberia, and there are limitless choices as to location, elevation, and size of property. The territory, with its streams, rivers, mountains, and even volcano features such as hot springs, thermal mud, mini-cones, and fumaroles, can seem remote, yet the international airport at Liberia is less than an hour away from much of this amazing landscape. The short list below is a miniscule hint of what you may be able to find amid these northern volcanos. The volcanos may be seen from Lake Arenal, especially from near the communities of Nueva Guatemala, Tierras Morenas, and Aguacate, but there are many other towns and villages north of the lake, and some of those areas have views up to Lake Nicaragua and to the Pacific Ocean. The hotel we have listed below is beautifully situated beside one of these national parks and is a place to enjoy myriad activities such as hiking, hot springs and thermal mud baths, river rafting and tubing, canopy tours, and horseback riding as well as living with many colorful birds and other wildlife.
