| Tronadora is a very attractive village at the end of the short paved section of the road that follows the south side of the lake to El Castillo and thence to La Fortuna. It actually is Nueva or "new" Tronadora, the original village now covered by the man-made lake. The two-mile paved road from Cinco Esquinas to Tronadora is an attractive thoroughfare, lined much of the way with palm trees and attractive small Tico homes. Based on a flat plain between lake and mountain, the village has an immense central soccer field, a church, a busy grocery store, a general store, a bakery, a bar, a pizza restaurant, a "libreria" (school supplies, etc.), a two-year-old technical high school, a large grade school, a small clinic, and a community center. Pastured hills rise steeply behind the town and the lake road continues unpaved from Tronadora to Rio Chiquito, passing several newly started gated communities and other places where homes, lots, and farm or finca acreage is available. The commercial center, Tilaran, is only about 15 minutes away. The general area presents a stunningly beautiful environment and is rich with birds and other wildlife. Depending on location, there are wonderful territorial and lake views, including views to Arenal Volcano and the northwest volcanos Tenorio and Miravalles. The residents have plans to make the area an ecotourism destination. | ||||
