Tierras Morenas is a classic Costa Rican farming village where the traditional Costa Rican oxcart is still in use, pulled by a team of two powerful yet obedient oxen. The oxen and the "boyero" or oxcart driver are still celebrated in the annual festival, while among the statuary in the pretty, white church is a statue of Christ driving an oxcart. Motorized vehicles do most of the work, however. The village is located past Sabalito at the end of the good paved road that comes uphill from the western end of the lake. It sits on the western brow of the windmill-bedecked hills, looking down on the coastal lowlands. There are lots and small Tico homes available as well as acreage from the "fincas" or farms. On many acres on the eastern edge of Tierras Morenas a wildlife park featuring indigenous animals is being built. In the foothills below Tierras Morenas is a little-known archeological site called the Farollan Petroglyphs. Owners of the ranch on which the petroglyphs were discovered provide walking tours to the petroglyphs, which are located beside a small, winding, tree-shaded river where you may swim and fish. A secondary road leads north from Tierras Morenas past villages on the slopes of the Volcan Tenorio to join the paved highway that runs between the Interamerican Highway and the Northern Zone. Lovely acreage is available in this region. Close to Tierras Morenas, lots are available in two gated communities while individual lots are available elsewhere.
